The Directions EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) Dynamics conference is currently taking place in The Hague, Netherlands. As the biggest Microsoft Dynamics NAV conference in the world, Directions EMEA this year draw over 2230 attendees from 64 countries; by far it’s the biggest audience in Directions history and the reason is clear. We are in times of massive change in the Dynamics industry and for business in general; we are in the area of digital transformation. Business is changing, and Dynamics NAV is changing as well; more about this later.

What makes this conference different is that it’s a community conference and not a Microsoft conference. Partners talking to partners about partner challenges and partner opportunities. Obviously Microsoft is here as the main sponsor delivering great content during 196 sessions in 3 days. We will be providing updates from the conference but we would like to invite more partners to attend next year’s event. On that note, some of the information provided below is ‘hot-of-the-press’ so apologies for some screenshots taken during the many sessions.

Microsoft Dynamics NAV name change:

As per recent announcement Microsoft Dynamics NAV will from now on be known as Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central. This is to align the brand name of NAV/Navision with the global branding strategies.

Quick Facts:

  • Dynamics 365 Business Central is now available as an on-premise solution as well as a Cloud Solution
  • On our continent, the Cloud solution is currently only available for South African based customers. Microsoft is looking at an expansion for the rest of the African continent during calendar year 2019.

Going into 2022 the roadmap looks like this:

For current partners the biggest change remains the move to Extensions and away from Object Based configurations. We ran extension trainings during the last few weeks. For partners looking for more information, have a look at this link.

Dynamics 365 Business Central on-Premise:

On 1 October 2018 Microsoft announced the availability of Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central on-premise. Business Central on-premise is now available globally in two licence models:

  • Perpetual Licence on a named user basis
  • Subscription License (also named)

There are lots of changes for current NAV Partners and Customers and we addressed these questions during a Broadcast on Friday 26th of October. Moving to the cloud:

With the October release of Dynamics 365 Business Central, the connectivity of the on-premise customer to a cloud tenant became a reality. Business Central on-premise customers can now synchronise data to a Business Central Cloud tenant and benefit from cloud only business central features including Artificial intelligence on items such as Inventory and Debtor Management for Azure AI tools can help predict for instance when a customer is predicted to pay their accounts late (Read More) or applying stock attributes automatically purely based on an uploaded image.

Feature Update: An update was also given as to the new User Experience for Business Central and below some of the navigational updates from the latest release.

Side navigation tips and tricks:

  1. On pop-up cards:
  2. Each card has these icons at the top and are for ‘Edit; new and delete’
  3. All cards have what is called and Action Bar:
  4. Most actions relating that that card can be see there. If something is missing, click on ‘more options’ to show all actions. Sample above has all actions displayed thus ‘Less options’ appear.
  5. Cards also have this information icon
  6. When you click on the information icon you show or hide what is called ‘Fact Boxes’. This sample below is the User fact box as an example:
